Professor Rudolph P. Wüthrich

Professor of Nephrology

Professor Wüthrich received his MD in 1983 from the University of Geneva, after finishing his Bachelor of Science degree. Following completion of two post-doctoral positions at the University Hospital, Geneva, he became research fellow in renal medicine at Harvard Medical School. In 1989 he took up a clinical fellowship in nephrology, with responsibilities at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s hospital, Beth Israel Hospital and Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He has since held positions at University of Alabama Hospitals, going on to become senior fellow in nephrology at the University Hospital in Zürich. Between 1994 and 1999 he was scientific group leader at the Physiological Institute, University Zürich-Irchel. He became Division Director in nephrology at the Cantonal Hospital in St. Gallen in 1999 and is currently Director at the Division of Nephrology, University Hospital, Zürich.

Professor Wüthrich’s main research interests include the pathogenesis of tubulointerstitial nephritis, the progression of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), and the mechanisms and treatment of renal anemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism. He is board certified in medicine and nephrology in Switzerland and has published over 100 original articles, reviews, book chapters and books.
